Crete
Crete is a large island and a very popular tourist destination.
Its southerly position means it enjoys good weather earlier and later in the
season than more northerly islands. It is very popular with
tourists, and the north coast in particular is dotted with resorts built upon
package tour businesses. That makes it especially convenient for holiday
companies, who can easily ferry their clients by coach from the main airport at
Heraklion along the very good east-west highway. The north coast is,
however, prone to the Meltemi winds. Tourism has left its mark in
other parts of the island too, but it does not take much effort to find unspoilt
villages in the hinterland.
Crete has numerous attractions. As well as being a good
spot for sunseekers, it has some of the best historical sites in Greece, such as
Knossos and Festos, to name but two. Crete is also a good place for
walkers - and not just the famous Samaria Gorge It is also an
excellent choice for naturists. The south coast, in particular, provides a
wide choice of suitable beaches - both bustling and remote. Naturist
opportunities are, however, to be found on all coasts of Crete.
In short, Crete is an excellent destination in which to enjoy a varied holiday.
